Navajo Pilot???

It seems pretty unlikely that there was a Navajo Pilot at Guadalcanal so I did a Google search. It appears there was one native American pilot in all the war. His name was Lt Woody J. Cochran, a Cherokee Indian and bomber pilot who flew over New Guinea. So why add this to this to the Leathernecks film? Seems kinda farcical to me.
