The Water in the Cave

If it was so cold and they were so worried about their feet, why did they keep walking in the water in the cave? You would think, they would avoid water like the plague.

i watched this film years ago, and even as a kid wondered the same thing...
you do not want to get your boots/feet wet in cold weather because of trench foot. especialy in a korean winter.
were it me? i'd have bailed it out. if dripping in to fast. if it was, i'd have stayed out of it was.
but water aside, it is agood film, as is the steel helmet. and check out ' men in war' with robert ryan and aldo ray... Both very good korean war films

This was an otherwise great movie but every once in a while they would act like they were concerned about the cold, then other times it was no big deal, like the water in the cave.

The water in the cave, the stalagmites and stalagtites, all Hollywood hokum for visual and dramatic effect. Silly crapola especially if you can suspend your disbelief long enough...........

I'm not quite sure why the director wanted the water there, and would it not have frozen, too?? I dunno!

As for the soldiers sloshing around in the water, that actually is believable somewhat......... The shoe pac (also spelled "shoepac") boots were greatly improved versions of the WWII original, but were still inadequate for the harsh Korean winter, which hit the US Army upside the head.

The boots WERE waterproof, but even still, I wouldn't want to get them wet just on principle. There is lots to read about these boots on the web, particularly on OliveDrab.com.

I was a Vietnam vet. We had standard non-waterproof boots, and sometimes had a completely waterproof rubber boot. But nobody could wear a fully waterproof boot for long without having their feet fall off. Sure, they kept the water out, but they also kept the sweat in. They were pretty useless.

I agree. There's no way real soldiers would've kept walking through that water in the cave, in that freezing weather. It bugged me every time I saw it done.
