dubbing

The dubbing is really distracting. Dialogue isn't synced with the actors' lips, but, OK, that happens with a lot of films. However, what gives this serious film an air of camp is that the English speaking voices for some, if not many, supporting characters just don't fit. Additionally, many lines are spoken flatly & inappropriately. For example, when the man who works for the Gas company speaks to Ingrid, sounds as if he has a modified NY accent & the delivery of the lines is so flat that I can envision this actor in a sound studio just reading from a script. It borders on camp & unintended comedy. Rossellini meets "What's Up, Tiger Lily?"
Nonetheless, still a great film.

I couldn't agree more. The dubbing was horrible and distracting, especially the son and Giulietta Masina. Aside from the odd kung fu movie, this was the worst I've ever seen.

Agree...saw it for the first time the other night on TCM. At first, I thought it was in another language, dubbed to English. But after a while, I realized it WAS in ENGLISH! Still a really good film.
