Never noticed it before but when Gort first picks up Patrica Neal you can clearly see she is supported by string or wire. I'm guessing thereafter, when we only see a partial view from the back, he is actually carrying a lightweight dummy.

Lock Martin, the guy who played Gort, was not strong enough to carry Neal, in spite of his size. He needed the help of wires.

Yes. I was just surprised to notice this in a film I've watched many times over the years. And of course once I've seen it I'll never not see it.
