Gorgeous Technicolor


Something about the old films which brim w\that "painted"look of Technicolor !

I think it also contributes to the escapism of the older films.

I have always found the Technicolor rendering of "David and Bathsheba" to be unlike the more garish, saturated or "painted" look of some productions. I think it sports the more muted tones that the subject matter and setting require and the color complements the art direction that largely relies upon earth tones.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

You can thank the great Fox cinematographer Leon Shamroy. See his fantastic work on Leave Her to Heaven, one of the most gorgeous color films ever, for which he won the Oscar for color cinematography for 1945.
