were they real ships?

The scenes of ships looked very real, even in the battle scenes, much better than the usual models with unconvincing ocean waves. Did they use real ships?

The reason I doubt my own eyes is that when Mutiny on the Bounty was made in 1962, only 11 years later, there was an enormous amount of publicity about how the Bounty was re-made in a shipyard in Nova Scotia, and it went on display in ports for many years later, until it sank during Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

The trivia mentions that HMS Lydia was reused from the ship used for "Treasure Island" filmed a year earlier. I suspect that both were models, even if they were large models. The Goofs section notes several errors that could not have occurred if they used ships under sail.
