'The Great S&M Amusement Corp.'

What a great name on the side of the carnival truck that pulled up behind Jan Sterling at the collapsed mine to set up shop: 'The Great S&M Amusement Corp.' A cheeky Billy Wilder gag, perhaps?

That was hilarious. And three trucks.

We assume S&M had the same common meaning then as it does now.

Of course the name was quite deliberate, a product of Wilder's cynicism and dark humor. It also flew right past most audiences in 1951 (most people didn't know what "S&M" stood for back then) and evidently the Hollywood censors as well, who were a bunch of idiots anyway.
