Question about the mother oyster

Why does she look at the calendar when the walrus invites the oysters? She sees that it’s March and the R is highlighted. What does this mean?

reply

Traditionally it was advised that oysters should only be eaten when there was an R in the month. I think it was to do with oysters apt to quickly go off in the warmer months so May to August. The cooler months of the rest of the year with R in them were considered more safer to consume oysters. So I expect that was what the mother oyster had her eye on. Knowing that she should have kept her eyes more targeted on her poor little oysters.
