I FINALLY 'GOT' this movie, after all these years!! Seriously... read!

Just to give you a little history and provide some context on me before offering my opinion on this film: I'm in my early thirties, grew up in America, smack dab in the Disney Renaissance of the '90s... As a person of this age, naturally I was exposed to "Alice in Wonderland" all throughout my childhood and life—whether through this Disney version or all the other incarnations, etc...

Like (many) viewers, the Disney version here never enticed me much (story-wise, it was always a bit too "out there" and unfocused, without the usual Disney sentimentality, etc...). I've sat through it many times growing up, with varying degrees of amusement and interest, you know.

But this past weekend, I was bored and put the tape in (I have an old VHS copy of this, bought from a thrift shop for two bucks). At my age, I feel that I've seen just about every movie I wanna see (sometimes multiple times) and I'm disillusioned with new movies these days anyway (Hollywood sucks...). Anyway, I put this movie in and... it really struck a chord in me. No, I had not ingested in any substance prior, ha. I found myself enthralled by the arbitrary "nonsense", visual and verbal puns and whimsy... and I think I know why:

It's nice to not have any structure. It's nice to not always search for the security of a "story" to hold onto. Like the best dreams during sleep, we can simply be swept by an incredibly visceral setting and events, regardless of plausibility... and it's just... LIBERATING.

I guess for a jaded movie viewer like me, this movie just proved to be an enticing antidote to everything regarding most movies: a post-modern "Story" about NOTHING! LOL.

As an addendum: I don't know if I'll be in the right frame of mind to consume this story just so like this again, but if not—it was a brief, exhilarating ride that I won't soon forget—just like the best dreams!

It's a little girl's dream. Like most dreams, it's random pieces of concious thought all mixed up together into a jumble of nonsense.
