Is it clear that they had sex?
There were signs, but not clear, at least to me. I enjoyed the movie, but don't consider it great.

shareI think they did. Just watching this now on Retroplex, and I'm catching hints that I didn't when I first saw this as a teen. They are playful with each other, they cuddle, and she never stops calling him "dear" and "darling" at one point. When they first go for a swim/bath, Rosie is very prudish about getting undressed, but later when they are swarmed by mosquitoes, Rosie doesn't hesitate to strip down to jump into the river (even though she ends up not having to). Finally, when they're stuck in the reeds after Allnut is bitten by the leeches. Rosie prays that, if they die, they both may enter heaven "despite their weakness."
shareThanks for your input, Maureen. I had caught most, if not all, of your points; not sure if I heard the 'weakness' line; that would have been pretty much definitive, but without it, the issue still murky, IMHO.
shareI thought it was murky too, even with her prayer. I love how old movies always make us guess about this. :-)
shareWhat a pity that there were no waves crashing against the shore, then we would know for sure. I really do love old movies though, I think that I am intelligent enough to work it out for myself, instead of having it portrayed in all its glory. OMG I must be getting old!!
sharePreferred the train going through the tunnel. ;)
shareNo gin left ? I hope they did what else was left for him
shareIt's not clear, but I'm guessing they had sex. There's the morning after scene with Hepburn preparing a cup of tea while Bogart is still sleeping. Then there is their sudden lack of hesitation when seeing each other wearing less clothes. And don't forget that part where Bogart asks in prayer that God forgive them for their weaknesses. And finally, how Bogart asks the captain to marry them because it would make the lady happy.
Really, the movie reminds me of a happy honeymoon in so many ways.
I think it's great.
My rating: 10
The movie was made in 1951, any indication they had sex is because we are looking at it 50+ years later and not what was originally intended.
shareWell, I know they had sex in 1951 because I was born in the middle of the following year. I also know that sex was implied in Bogart films because Mary Astor began the night she spent at Sam Spade's apartment with a long kiss. Bogart also tells Paul Henreid that he let Ingrid Bergman "pretend" that she still loved him. No. I think that implied sex was a regular staple of the movies in the forties and fifties.

> Bogart also tells Paul Henreid that he let Ingrid Bergman "pretend" that she still loved him.
I've always thought it was the other way around. Ingrid Bergman was prepared to sacrifice herself for Henried, and that Rick realized in that moment what true love was, and that his relationship to her was superficial and he grew up in that moment.
He went off to regain/redeem himself and make himself worthy of the love of a woman like Ilsa again.
If not for that scum, Will H. Hays, we'd probably know for sure.
shareSeriously though: in 1951 it was not the assumption that every time two adults got in a boat with nothing but giraffes and hippos watching them they just had to hump like bunnies!
-not that nothing like that never happened in real life, but if it came out that this is what the creative talent was even hinting at, then The African Queen would actually have become controversial, maybe even banned in places. (-not good for business..)
What we see with modern eyes 40+ years after the Sexual Revolution is a different animal entirely: "Jack and Jill went up the hill, they each had a buck and a quarter, Jill came down she had two fifty..."
I think it's a possibility. Hollywood at the time always hinted at things like that all the time. If you watch "Double Indemnity"1944 there is a scene that hints they had sex.
shareNot clear signs at all. We might as well figure they visited a city and bought supplies along the way. It's not shown that they did it.
shareAre you kidding? Really? Does any mature or reasonable person even need to ask? Of course they had sex. Movies of this era had to be subtle, but it was clear to me. A boat, a river, and adventure, a man and a woman wet together. She was clearly primed for her step into fullfillment and they both fell heads and heels over each other. How could it be any other way? Watch the movie over again and pay close attention to the mannerisms and the body language. It was beautiful and so much more sensual than just portraying the obvious.
"We will have stories to tell our grandchildren, Rosie"
"Dear Lord, judge us not for our weakness (sex), but for our love."
The clincher was that Charlie asked the Captain to marry them. There was a reason for this, to validate their relationship.
People have been the same forever. They had sex.
