The Cocoon

Does anyone know if the episode called The Cocoon (season 2, show 2) still exists? And, if it does, does anyone have a copy of it?

This was the one that frightened me more than any other in the series. It featured Jackie Cooper as one of a team of scientists doing research in a jungle. They come across a large cocoon which, when it opens brings forth a gigantic but invisible insect that wreaks havoc. We finally see the critter through a mold they make of it. As the scientists exit their cabin and attempt to escape to civilization we see that a batch of these cocoons are opening up to release their invisible new-born creatures into the world.

A sequel followed this episode, The Fury of the Cocoon, season 2, show 32. This one IS available on DVD but not, so far as I've been able to find, the episode that inspired it.

I've tried to keep track of what's available from Tales of Tomorrow (along with quite a few other anthologies) and I haven't seen any evidence of "The Cocoon" however, I do know that there are some episodes that still exist but aren't on the 3 official releases. "A child is Crying" and "The Diamond Lens" comes to mind. I bet there are lots of episodes that are intact but have yet to be released. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Yep. Fingers crossed. I've got the 3 dvds that have been released so far. I've also got a laser disc with a few ToT episodes on it but they're also on the dvds. Ah well. Fingers crossed that they'll bring out all that can be found.

Yep. Fingers crossed. I've got the 3 dvds from Image that have been released so far -- two from season one and one from season two. This accounts for 40 episodes. I've also got a laser disc with a few ToT shows on it but they repeat on the dvds. Ah well. I hope they'll bring out all that can be found.

your best bet would be thenostalgiamerchantuk.com. They have a preview channel on tvunetworks.com (can watch US SciFi channel too).

Your imagination and memory fail you a bit, but it is available at hulu.com for viewing.

1. It's first season, episode 36, and the full title is "The fury of the cocoon".

2. Jackie Cooper is nowhere in this episode, the lead actor is either Peter Capell or Cameron Prudhomme, I'm too lazy to figure out which character name was the lead.

3. The ending shows a cheesy effect where they are pulling props across the set with strings to make it look like an insect or insects are crossing the room and climbing up to unveil the insect statue that was made from the mold. The string pulling the statue back and forth, and eventually toppling it, is easily seen in the shot. There's no "batch of cocoons" - the show probably could not have afford the effects!

Sorry, Rockmail. My imagination and memory may fail at times, not about this. "The Fury of the Cocoon" is a sequel episode to the original "Cocoon" which did, in fact, star Jackie Cooper. I've got "The Fury..." on a TALES OF TOMORROW collection DVD but the original is not apparently available.

Though it's not on any of the three Image DVD collections, there are copies of the episode floating around.

I'd agree this was better than the sequel, which basically just repeats the story to slightly lesser effect.
