Lucy Cries Wolf

So after Lucy makes her first prank phone call to Ricky, Ricky calls Fred and Ethel to go see what’s going on. Fred comes in with a baseball bat and it’s kind of odd he would choose that as his weapon considering it’s been established that he owns a gun.

I don't know which episode reveals Fred owns a gun. Perhaps, in a panic, he just grabbed the nearest weapon he could quickly lay his hands on.

I personally love this offering, although it's clearly a one joke show, with virtually no story development.

In the Lucy is envious episode when Fred thinks the earth is being invaded by martians he walks into the apartment with a gun and tells Ricky they need to defend the apartment building from the Martian invasion

Also in the episode where everyone thinks the new neighbors are Russian agents who are going to kill them so they can assume their identities and take over the Capital, Fred reveals that he has 2 shotguns and they later use them to defend the apartment.

One of my favorite "Lucy goes waaay too far" episodes. But doesn't she always?

The only bit of illogic is expecting Ricky to be home in two minutes. In the early "Indian Show" episode, Lucy tells Ethel that she might stroll down to the club with Little Ricky in his carriage.

Ethel says, "Stroll? It's MILES down there!"

Still, the conversation when they get even with Lucy is hilarious. Ricky is going to wait "a respectable amount of time" to remarry.

When he says, "About ten days" and Lucy almost fall off the ledge, I lose it.

I don't think Ricky's racing home is unbelievable. He didn't "stroll", he obviously took a cab in a panic!

reply

Oh I didn't mean to imply that Ricky would "stroll" home. ha ha! It's not the "racing" home that I meant wouldn't happen in two minutes. It's the actual "getting there".
I assumed he'd take a cab. But have you ever tried to get anywhere quickly by cab in New York City during midday? I have. It's not fast.

reply

The script doesn't indicate how much time has transpired between Fred's call and Ricky's arrival. Even if it was an hour, it's believable that Fred and Ethel have waited and that Lucy sat quietly out on the ledge.

Say it took Ricky a half hour to grab a cab. It would only take him 30 minutes to get home if the cab sped.

reply

Well it ALL HAPPENED in thirty minutes! haha No, sorry, sometimes I forget that these episodes aren't happening in "real time".

I did forget about the possible time lapse after Fred's call.
I was only thinking of Lucy's frantic second call to Ricky when she cried, "Where are you? That man is still here!!" Now SHE didn't give Ricky more than two minutes to get home. But Lucy always does expect the impossible.
