Lucy Still So Relevant

As we continue to approach the 70th anniversary of "I Love Lucy", it's interesting to note that, besides the new Nicole Kidman movie, "Being the Ricardos" (which has begun production under Amazon), I coincidently saw TWO references to the series this morning.

In a letter to advice columnist Ask Amy, a woman wrote in, describing she and her husband as "Ricky" and "Lucy", trying to reconcile their best friends, whom they called "Fred" and "Ethel." Right after this, I read the comic strip "Willy and Ethel", which follows a lazy, always unemployed, middle-aged loser and his nagging wife. In today's comic, Willy is sitting glued to the TV in the middle of the night. His wife is standing over him in a bathrobe and curlers and says, "Are you watching that 'Lucy in the candy factory' for the ten millionth time?!" In the second frame she is now seated beside him, watching and smiling.

ILL, still a cultural icon.

I've seen a number of references to ILL in TV shows.

I know it's not a current reference, but I recall one from the sitcom Wings from back in the nineties. Helen had a long, involved scheme that she was trying to explain to her sister Casey.

Casey thought it was silly and decided to respond in a Spanish accent, "Gee, Loo-see, do you think we could pull that off?" Or something like that.
