Lucy's Birthday Episode

Does anyone find it odd that no one invited Mrs. Trumbell? I mean she's the one who babysitted Little Ricky whenever Lucy had to go off and do something stupid or go to Europe. Seems like kind of a jerk move.

reply

Well it was a second season episode, so maybe they just didn't know mrs. Trumball too well at that point. Plus Lucy's mom watched little Ricky when they went to Europe not mrs. Trumbal.

reply

They had already called on her multiple times to watch little ricky, not inviting her was a jerk move. They owed her a lot

Ii find it interesting that Ricky's birthday is never mentioned. Ethel gets ugly hostess pants and a night at the theater on her birthday. Lucy borrows one of Fred's suits so Ricky can have a new suit made for him for his birthday. Little Ricky gets Superman at his birthday party.

But Ricky never even has his birthday mentioned.

reply

Probably Desi's idea - by not giving Ricky a birthday, he could be 35 forever!!

reply

I didn't think about that! Of course, even with celebrating birthdays, Lucy Ricardo remained "ageless". Remember when she told the mind reader's assistant at the Tropicana her age?
"August 6th."

"August 6th what?"

"August 6th, period!"

Also, when the Ricardos were nervous about their twenty year mortgage, Ricky said old he'd be in twenty years. When he started to say how old Lucy would be, she stopped him, saying that she'd fudged the numbers for so long that she forgot her actual age.

reply

Since this is not a favorite episode of mine, I can't recall how old Ricky says he is. Isn't it 37?

reply

It may be 37. I thought he said 36 but I could be wrong. I'll have to rewatch that scene. I think he was supposed to be older than Lucy although in real life, Desi was several years younger. But you probably knew that!

reply

Desi could (for the most part) pull off being 36, but Lucy could NOT by this point. Anyway, if she was supposed to be 33 in 1953's "Lucy Tells the Truth", she would've been nearly 37 "Lucy Hates to Leave."

reply

Yeah, true. Wasn't Desi six years younger than Lucy? In the first season of the show, they looked about the same age. A few years later, some of the stress and strain had aged Lucy a bit.

I read something about "Country Club Dance" which was sort of like the makeover "Charm School" episode. It said that, at that point, the cast couldn't really pull off faking youthfulness. Not that Bill Frawley ever could. ha!

reply

While nobody else has stated likewise, I have always noticed the subtle changes in Desi from seasons three and four. After watching some of the Hollywood shows lately, I watched season three's "Equal Rights" last night and again was stunned by how much more handsome he was in '53. It's not so much that he looks older in the Hollywood arc, as much as he appears, well, alcoholic. I can't really define the difference except to note that there is a difference.

reply

It is subtle. But if you watch a season one episode and then a season five or six ep right after it, you can notice a fairly big change. Stress and drinking took a big toll on his looks and he really appeared bloated.

reply

Well, the difference between Desi in seasons one and five are very obvious. I'm referring to the much more subtle difference between Desi in seasons three and four. Simply cue up a scene from, say, "Ricky Needs an Agent", then watch a scene from "Lucy Tells the Truth", and you'll see the difference.
