IF They Went to a Season Seven...

...I was thinking that it would've been funny if Lucy's mother moved in with them.

It comes from my own life since my mom is getting on in years and shouldn't live alone. But she's TOO stubborn to live with one of us "kids".

Katherine Card was so funny as Lucy's mom and she just drove "Mickey" up a wall. Lucy's other friends from New York could have visited them in Connecticut. But having Lucy's mother move in with them would've been totally natural and organic. There would be no need for a big explanation.

I would've preferred a seventh season rather than the mostly unfunny "celebrity of the week" episodes of the Lucy/Desi Comedy Hour.

Very good idea, PJ. We know Kathryn Card was around, as she appears in the opening teaser of the Japan episode from 1959. (Sadly, she has no funny lines to speak of).

Ball and Arnaz were signed to a multi season contract with Westinghouse and were expected back for several more years. It was Desi who decided that the four would return for hour-long specials several times a season. He stated he'd wanted to do this format since 1955! He held off when CBS balked.

I would've also liked to have seen NO travel eps, as they had just moved to the country. I also would've liked to have seen the TV attenna and shower eps HERE, rather than on The Lucy Show. And, yes, several offerings with Carolyn, Marion Strong and the other club women would've been refreshing.

Plot idea: Carolyn and Betty Ramsey get into a fight, right after she and Charlie move to Connecticut.

I thought the travel episodes were just too "gimmicky". There were still a lot of funny situations which could be mined from the country setting. And I know it was a TV show, but really, how many middle class families travel THAT MUCH every year?

Lucy Ricardo installing a new shower with the help of Ethel would've been hilarious! Ricky comes home and finds the upstairs flooded. lol

You really love Carolyn Appleby (hate her kid though, lol). I could see her and Betty getting off on the wrong foot since both could be very pretentious and snooty.

I just saw Doris Singleton on a sitcom last night and it reminded me of you. It was one of the early episodes of All in the Family where Edith was called for jury duty. Miss Singleton was her roommate in the hotel. She played a spoiled, high society type who was angry that Edith wouldn't vote "guilty" so they all could go home. The hotel food was not up to her high standards.
Doris Singleton could always play the snob!

Wasn't the Lucy/Desi Comedy hour just season 7?

reply

Oh yes, I guess it could be called season seven. But ILL ONLY did six seasons. The seventh was the much less funny Lucy/Desi Comedy Hour.

The Lucy/Desi Comedy Hour was 13 hour-long shows, which aired between September 1957 and March 1960, comprising seasons 7, 8, aand 9.

As for the travel shows, they made sense to a certain degree as Ricky WAS an actor/entertainer, not an insurance salesman. To me, they ran their course with the Florida theme. Only "Off to Florida" is a real classic, with the Cuba offering a series low point.

The guest star stuff got to be too much as well, the Tallulah Bankhead ep being a notable exception.

That would have been a fantastic idea! Lucy's mother could have lived with them, Carolyn could have moved to the neighborhood. And the TV antenna and shower eps of The Lucy show would have been perfect for season 7. And there are many more 'Lucy Show' episodes that would have been great for season 7. The redecorating episode of The Lucy show where Lucy and Viv crash through the house, would have been sooo funny for ILL. I wish I had a time machine to go back in time and tell them to do a season 7 haha. I always had an idea for an episode of season 7 where Lucy and Ethel go back to the apartment house to collect the rent or something and get into all sort of crazy situations with the new tenants lol.
