Furniture

As has been discussed before, Lucy bought new furniture - a lot - during the series six year
run.

The first couch, which is really just a loveseat (seating only two people) was changed because
apparently Ball wanted the first apartment to have a new look in the second year. And while
the new furniture is a vast improvement, it really didn't provide more seating.

Less than a year later (end of season two), Lucy buys the sectional sofa and coffee table
because, according to her, "the old stuff" looks awful (!).

In season three, they buy new furniture AGAIN (!), but the excuse here is that, because
LUCY "ruined" the Mertz apartment while redecorating it (it's FRED who turns on the fan),
Lucy and Ricky somehow owe them new furniture.

The plus here is that the wider dark sofa actually seats THREE characters (partially why it
was selected, I would think). Can you imagine trying to stage the opening scene of "The
Charm School" with all three couples AND Eve Whitney and Tom without it?!

In the country episodes, it's true new furniture was needed, simply because there wasn't
enough of it, and the new stuff looked better.

I still have the same sofa and loveseat that I bought in 2006!! But it's quality furniture and
I see no reason to replace it!

She did buy a lot of new furniture! But I do have an aunt that buys new furniture all the time because like Lucy, shes just sick of the old stuff, there's not really anything wrong with the old ones. Now, maybe she doesn't buy every year but its often haha. So Lucy isn't the only one!

Bewitched was just as frequent, if not, more so. In the show's eight year run, they changed the wallpaper every two
seasons; the furniture and general décor three times. They even remodeled and expanded the kitchen!

reply

Oh yes I noticed that! They had so many different sofas. The kitchen was the most drastic change, I wonder why they did that, and I don't even remember them even mentioning it. All of a sudden it was bigger haha.

Yes, Lucy changed furniture a lot.

Coincidentally I've also had several sofas and a rocking chair that I bought circa 2006. I don't feel the need to change them either.

I wonder if Lucille Ball changed furniture in her own house as often.

As far as all the different furniture, my favorite sofa and chair were the ones Lucy bought and hid in the kitchen when they switched apartments. I don't know why. I just like them the best.

Wow! Rocking chairs are sooo relaxing and make for very quaint and
charming decor.

My place is filled with classic movie/TV decor, and I always have a director's chair amongst my furniture. I say, "always have" because they are cheaply made and I have to replace them about every two years!

As for Ball, she apparently hated change. After her 1989 death, Luci went through her mother's belongings and found four rotary phones, tangled together by their cords! Though long obsolete, Lucy couldn't part with them. Intriguing look into her psyche.

BTW, I am no longer gbennett5, as evidenced by my new screen name.
