The Charm School: Why was that other couple needed?

You know, the third couple with the Ricardos and the Mertzes at the beginning? There was nothing bad about them obviously, but I'm not sure I understand what their purpose was. The exact same storyline and point could have gotten across if it had just been the four of them as it usually was. Was it just to show that the two couples had other friends whom we didn't know about?

It could have been just to show that they had other friends. I liked Lou Ann. I wish she had been on other episodes.

It helped to have another couple to demonstrate that when they all got together, the men congregated in one room and the women in another. When it was just the Ricardos and the Mertzes, they usually stayed in the same room. If it's more of a party situation, the husbands and wives split up.

This is a great episode, and considering that at least ten minutes of time is laid out to show how ignored Lucy and
Ethel feel, I think it was a great choice to include Lou Ann and her husband. To have at least three women react to glamorous Eve Whitney, plus have Bill Hall have to react to the three other men is hilarious!

Incidentally, Lou Ann is played by Vivi Janiss, a great character actor (she was the harried wife in the TZ episode,
"The Fever").
