Bridge and Poker

As someone who has never had an interest in cards, I've never bothered to learn the
rules of various games, and therefore have missed out on a lot of "cards humor",
including this show.

In the first season, there is the scene where Lucy wants to join Ricky and Fred's poker
game. The entire scene goes over my head, as I don't get the "card jokes."

Also, in "Face to Face", Ethel and Fred "stage" a fight, Ethel stating that Lucy and Ricky
are "lousy" bridge players. Lucy responds with, "Look who's talking, the Queen of the Ace
Trumpers." The line gets a huge laugh, even though I don't get it.

Very rare breed, us non-card-playing fans. I also don't drink coffee. So there you go.

My grandmother and her sisters played almost every card game except bridge, So in Lucy whenever they talk about bridge it goes over my head as well. I don't drink coffee either! In pioneer women when she puts the eggshells in the coffee and she says "my grandmother was swedish" I never understood that line lol. Apparently they put eggs in coffee over there? I don't know lol.

My grandmother and her friends played pinochle. I never learned that game either!

I do know how to play poker. I'm not very good at it, but I know the basics. I don't know all the different poker games though like Texas Hold "Em.

One time I tried to learn bridge. i went to an on-line site to read about the game. The more I read, the more confused I got. So I quit.

But I am a big coffee drinker.

That line about Bridge means that Ethel is playing a trump card (a suit that is called that has higher value over the other suits) to beat an Ace that her partner had played which would've won the trick and no need to use a trump card to take the trick.

Well... that's as clear as mud! LOL Seriously, I just have no head for bridge. I suppose I would need someone who plays bridge to actually walk me through a game. That's how I learned to play all the other card games that I know.

Thanks, Ken. That explanation was like putting on dark sunglasses at an indoor funeral.
