Really Enjoying Season Two

Over the last week or so, I've been catching up with season two shows that I love but
haven't watched in a long while.

I LOVE Verna Felton, so I enjoyed "Sales Resistance" (love her scene with the dirt clod),
and "Lucy Hires a Maid." Also "Vacation From Marriage" and definitely Lucy's baby
shower, where Ricky feels ignored, so Fred throws HIM a "daddy shower." Lucy and
Ethel in drag is a hoot!

I love "Lucy Hires an English Tutor", but I don't care for the ep where Lucy finds out she's
pregnant. Also the birth show is definitely not a fave. But I love the post-baby eps a lot.

Two that have grown on me:

"The Club Election", and "The Camping Trip." Also, thanks to PJ, I've rediscovered the
joy of "The Matchmaker."

A lot happens in this season (pregnancy/baby/new apartment).

Once again, we're on the same Lucy wavelength. I just watched "The Camping Trip" ("these look like good duck trees to me") and "The Matchmaker" ("Have you ever thought how nice it would be to have a woman of your OWN to saw in half?") the other day.

When I was a child, I did not realize that Eddie Grant really thought Lucy was flirting with him and she was actually making a date with him for herself, not "Sylvia".

Watching season two wouldn't be complete for me without Lucy's new furniture which she hides in the kitchen. I watched that one too.
"Butter on BREAD? I'll never get used to your strange Cuban dishes."

I must admit, I'd love to see what really would have happened to Lucy's hair if she left a home permanent on for five hours!

Quick question, PJ. Do you think Lucy is wearing a wig when she comes back into the room? Most likely, that
would be the quickest change to make, but it really looks like Lucy's real hair, all teased!

reply

It sort of does look like Lucy's hair. But I don't think Lucille Ball would've been happy about having her hair all teased up like that. So I always assumed that it was a wig.

It's a funny episode. But it reveals some strange things about Lucy. For instance, she ONLY had manicure scissors? What household doesn't have a pair of scissors? lol I actually have two pairs, one upstairs and one downstairs. I'm always cutting something.

I also wonder how much money Lucy would really save by making her own dress. Of course, a dress pattern only cost about fifty cents. But Lucy had to buy the material for the dress and rent a sewing machine. I wonder how she lugged it home since they didn't have a car! She probably had to take a taxi. Then there was the unexpected expense of replacing the rug which got cut out along with the dress!

Guess what. I only have manicuring scissors. I used them to cut my nails and I used them to cut wrapping paper
for Christmas gifts.

Guess it's time I went out and bough a pair.

I don't think it was about saving a super amount of money, but rather Lucy proving to Ricky that she could be
practical.

In the entire ep, Ricky treats Lucy like a child. Of course, she ACTS like a child (trying to hide the furniture).

Lastly, you'd think Ricky would've brought up the best argument - she just WON all the home show furinature
less than a year before!!!

You only have manicure scissors. But you're a guy. Most women have a pair of scissors in the kitchen drawer. I'd love to see you cut wrapping paper for Christmas. It must take you a looong time! LOL

Yes, Lucy was trying to prove that she could be practical and economize. We see how long she kept that promise!

I forgot about the home show furniture! It wasn't old. But Lucy couldn't resist a sale.

Verna Felton was my next door neighbor when I was a little kid in No. Hollywood, CA.

I love the tv show and have watched all of the seasons.

reply

How cool!!!! What was she like in real life? Her son was on the show a lot (most notably in "Mr. and Mrs. TV Show").

reply

She was a delightful woman! Yes, her son Lee Millar was a nice guy and so was his wife Edith. They lived in the "rumpus room" behind Verna's house. He and his wife Edith had two daughters. One of the daughters died. There is a biography of Verna written by Frederick Tucker. It's a great book.

Don't send a lynch mob to my home, but her son, Lee (a delight on the show) always struck me as gay. To me,
it's almost impossible to not notice, but I remember learning years ago that he married and had two children.
Not a big deal, and certainly nobody's business either way, but that's how he comes across to me. Very
good-looking man.

How lucky you were to be neighbors with them!! Will have to check out the book.
