Desi's Growth as a Perfomer

There's no denying that Desi Arnaz was one of the most unique TV personalities of all time.
Aside from his enormous sex appeal (that pajama top scene, brief and tame though it is,
stills resonates with a bang in this viewer), his musical talent and eye for early TV production
are awesome, even by today's standards.

In the first year (when he was at his trimmest and most physically appealing), he was
considered little more than Lucy's "straight man." Viewers in those days really couldn't
appreciate or understand his genius and vision (many dismissed him as "Lucy's husband").
With time, of course, people were educated by his tremendous "behind-the-scenes"
talent.

But it takes more than the first season or so, to really see his COMIC talent. And with
each passing year (and, sadly, as his looks slowly faded), he became funnier and funnier.
As a kid, I had a huge crush on him, and as a teen, I drooled over him. But it took me
many years into adulthood to really appreciate what he adds to the show.

Think about it: Arnaz was so unique, and his relationship to Lucy so personal, that, unlike
Dick York on Bewitched, ILL could've NEVER survived a recasting of "Ricky."

Certainly his very first episodes coast on charm and a sort of wooden presence. But his
last episodes, show an almost rubbery perfection! For instance, in "Building a Barbecue",
"Ricky" has had so many disastrous run-ins with Lucy, that he's almost NUTS when
accuses her: "I-don't-know! But-it-just-so-happens-that-whenever-something-goes-
wrong-'round-here-I-know-where-to-start-looking!!!!" Lol!

So let's give the Cuban his due, and start naming some of HIS funniest bits!

Yes, Desi Arnaz was good looking in his heyday. Sadly he did age quite rapidly, probably due to drinking and a lot of stress. I remember seeing him in a guest appearance on the show he produced in the sixties,"The Mothers-in-Law". I thought he was really old. But he was only in his early fifties then.

In the first season of ILL Desi was mostly Lucy's straight man. But he more than held his own with the redhead. Considering that he really had very little acting experience, especially in comedy, he developed as a performer quite rapidly.

I love his "bugged out eyes" look whenever Lucy did something shocking. In "The Indian Show" his expression is hilarious when he hears Lucy singing the duet with him instead of Juanita.

His performances was mostly understated. He had some great facial expressions. Lucy buys new furniture and hides it in the kitchen. Ricky hid behind the kitchen door to scare her. I love that expression on his face.

Desi had such an infectious laugh too. Remember when he walks in on Lucy the sculptress when she is sculpting Fred who is wearing his union suit? I never fail to join in laughing when Ricky breaks up.

Just last night, I watched a third-season classic, "The Black Wig." Even though he KNOWS what to expect, Ricky's
shock, and covering his one cheek, when Lucy strolls by him, is pretty powerful. and sets up the sexual sparks between
them - as if they were STRANGERS - is pretty powerful. Everyone's reaction to this is pretty powerful.

I love "The Black Wig". Ricky sure did know how to flirt!

The "woman with black hair" asks if she has seen him somewhere before and I love his sexy, smooth reply, "Well, I've BEEN somewhere before."

Or how about his comment, "I could teach you to rumba."

I read that Desi supposedly said the same thing to Lucy when they first met. No wonder she fell head over heels!
