The Club Election

I've grown to enjoy this ep over the last year, and especially like the scene where Lucy and
Ethel's "friendly" rivalry turns into a big fight when Ricky and Fred show off the nastier posters
the two women have devised for themselves to win the "presidency."

However, the final quote Fred starts to say - something "for our welfare, Lucy Ricardo is
a dirty! -" gets a HUGE studio laugh, but I've never been able to figure out what "dirty
word" is supposed to rhyme with "welfare" (Ethel cuts Fred off with, "That's the one!").

Any clues?

I can't find my DVD with that episode! It's around here somewhere!! Aaarggh

But I racked my brain (such as it is) and I think the quote was, "With our club's welfare do not tinker, Lucy Ricardo is a dirty stinker."

I think that's the line. Ethel cuts Fred off pretty quickly when he gets to that part.

Lucy did have a big ego. Everyone else wanted Ethel for Club President. But Lucy had to find a way to get elected.

Yes, that must be it.

Strange episode. The opening "baby scenes" from this period (filmed while Ball was still on maternity leave) are a bit
awkward. This one is the weakest. It's a curiously long scene, and it takes a while for it to melt into "memory" mode,
with Lucy awaiting "the thundering herd." This scene, too, is very long, albeit funny, as Lucy finally resorts to giving
Carolyn (here "Lillian") her cashmere sweater so she will suggest a second nomination (Lucy).

By no means a classic offering (if I don't watch it for a long period, I always tend to forget the details of the ep). But
in my new "love affair" with the great Doris Singleton, I've watched it several times in the last few months.

I watched this one last night after I found it. The disc was on my coffee table. "Lucy" is all over my house!

You mentioned the "baby scene". This episode along with four others including "Sales Resistance" and "The Inferiority Complex" were filmed and held back to be shown after Lucille Ball went on maternity leave. The rest of the cast came back to film the opening scenes to indicate that they were flashbacks.
Those opening scenes were omitted when the show was in syndication, at least they were omitted from the station that aired I Love Lucy that we watched. I never knew that they were supposed to be "flashback" episodes. They were aired after "Lucy Goes to the Hospital", so I used to think that they happened after the baby was born.

I didn't remember that this was the first episode with Caroline (then Lillian) Appleby. Lucy and Lillian seemed to be on friendly terms in this episode. However, Lillian would only help Lucy with a little "friendly bribery". And Lucy wasn't exactly being a great friend to Ethel. The club wanted her as the new President, but Lucy had to try to get the position for herself.

Early on, Ricky suggests the women meet out back, "like other cats." Cats indeed. I love the scene where
Carolyn (yawn, Lillian) arrives, gossiping about Marion Strong - who suddenly enters. They then all warmly
yell, "Mar-io-onnnnn!".

Women.

P.S: Love Ricky's arrival in that smoking jacket...that hairy chest. Wow. Nice.

Women, LOL There are several times when the Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League is gossiping. Their club just seems an excuse to get together to gossip and eat. I don't know what the club has to do with "fine art".

Lucy pulled that same stunt in phone conversations.

In the matchmaking episode, she says to Ethel as she dials the phone, "Why I'm sticking my neck out for that bleached blonde wolf in sheep's clothing...Sylvia darling!"

In the salad dressing episode she calls Carolyn to see if they can have a spot at Charlie's TV station to advertise their product
She tells Ethel they'll have to give her a cut of the profits. "She is the greediest, most penny pinching...Carolyn darling!"

Lucy had a lot of friends and she gossiped about all of them.

I always like Ricky's smoking jacket too.
