LOL When I read your post all I could think was, "Then you better hide from gbennett!"

Of course if you never found her funny, humor is subjective. But ILL has stood the test of time. How many shows from the 1950's are still remembered so fondly and are actually played on TV?

Lucy was a classic in the sense that people could relate to her frustrations, domestic problems, marital disagreements, etc.

I'm sure there are other sitcoms you'd find more amusing, but some of us still LOVE Lucy!

Interesting list and I do like some of those shows.

But I can honestly say, I've never seen 'Ozzie and Harriet' on TVLand.

Bonanza and Gunsmoke, definitely. Actually belong to a Bonanza website and we are diehard, long time fans of the show. I think I've come across The Lone Ranger on some western channel.

The Honeymooners- I have the DVD of the classic 39 episodes. I love it. But it hasn't been shown regularly on TV in years.

Twilight Zone- Yes, I am a big fan of it. I think it airs on a few stations. I always look forward to the holiday marathons. And I love Alfred Hitchcock Presents. I have a few DVDs of the hour long episodes.

Most of the other shows you cited, I am not running them down, but I just don't think they have shown the longevity of Lucy.

When I mentioned other shows in my post, I was really referring to the sitcoms of the fifties. There were a number of them, like 'Burns and Allen' and 'Our Miss Brooks' which just haven't stood the test of times.

Yes, "to each his own". If you don't think ILL is funny, well that's okay. I just view it as a classic which has remained popular for half a century.

...And "grounds for divorce", seriously you don't think that married people have differences, disagreements and arguments? No two people will ever agree on everything. It's no reason to get a divorce. Lucy and Ricky stuck it out. Sadly, Lucy and Desi didn't.

There is conflict in any relationship. And conflict is what makes for interesting drama and comedy.

You forgot Leave It To Beaver. It didn't make your list???? That was on landofree's list. That show is just as popular as ILL.
I actually enjoy ILL. After that??? All of those other shows she had in the 60's were just a rehash of what she had done.
I enjoy Lucy once in a great while. I do think that she has stood the test of time. Many people love her. I doubt that will ever change.

I prefer LITB... AlsoKnownAs.... Leave It To Beaver.

Leave it to Beaver? Yes a funny show, good clean comedy and the kids were respectful to the adults. it's just not a show I want to watch over and over. I have all six seasons of ILL on DVD. No Beaver episodes. For me, that's the real test. Do I want to purchase the DVDs and watch the show over and over?

After ILL, Lucille Ball was just trying to capture the Lucy Ricardo character in one form or another. But nothing could recapture the magic of that first show.

"For me, that's the real test. Do I want to purchase the DVDs and watch the show over and over?"

I can't argue with that because everyone has that feeling about a certain TV show or a movie. It really is a matter of wanting to see a show over and over again.
I feel the same way about certain books.

I have all of the seasons of Leave it to Beaver. I never get tired of them.
I Love Lucy? I doubt that I will ever buy that show. I can catch an episode on a few local TV stations on any day of the week.
Smile! Lucy has stood the test of time. She goes on....
I have my fave episodes.

I'm the opposite. I own all of "I Love Lucy" and can watch them over and over. By contrast, I don't
care for "Leave to Beaver", as I find the show appealing only to kids. The parents are ice cold,
and comedy pretty sophomoric.

"I Love Lucy" stands as the single most durable TV sitcom in history. It's really the only one still
showing on LOCAL TV stations! Also, I work with young people 18 to 24. They've never heard
of "Mary Tyler Moore", "All in the Family", Ozzie and Harriet" and many other sitcoms even from
the '80's and '90's. And when they're channel-surfing and come across ILL, they smile and stick
with the episode. Ball still has that power. Yes, "Star Trek" and "Twilight Zone" are equally
famous, but they're not sitcoms.

I suppose it really is a matter of personal taste and opinion.

There is no doubt that pretty much everyone, young and old knows I Love Lucy.
You'll get no argument from me.
I still laugh at many of the episodes. My personal faves are when they go to California. I still love the one with Bill Holden. It doesn't matter how many times I have seen it either. I still laugh til I cry.

I wasn't knocking ILL. I simply prefer LITB.

reply

Well, not everyone likes everything. My father, brother, and many people I've known don't
like "I Love Lucy." The reasons are usually the same: "She's too sneaky"; "She's too selfish."

I also love Judy Garland, and know many - even from her own era - who don't/didn't like her.
The reason is always the same: "She's too nervous."

To each their own.

reply

Yes, there are those people who can't seem to appreciate Lucy Ricardo. I got my love for the character from my mom.

But she never liked Judy Garland at all. The Wizard of Oz was my favorite movie as a child. Mom can't stand musicals so she pretty much hated everything Judy Garland starred in.

reply

I didn't like I Love Lucy either.

My wife does.

It is one of her favorite old shows.

So, in a platonic way, yes.
