PIZMO BEACH

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER JOE FRIDAY QUESTIONING A DRUNK WHO WAS TRYING TO GET TO PIZMO BEACH? AS I RECALL, VERY FEW EPISODES WERE FUNNY. THIS ONE STICKS IN MY MIND.

He's talking about "The Big Chance" (3.23), which was an original ep. They were trying to find out the whereabouts of a missing patrolman in a 1-man car. They may have re-used that bit in the colorized version, but Dragnet was notorious for recycling scenes, dialogue, and cases over the years.

Anyway, because you know so much more than I do about this series, perhaps you could explain to me just WHY the title to every episode begins with "The Big..."
I suspect it's simply due to the influence of film noir, particularly the noir of that period (early 50s) in which every other toughguy film seems -- but only in retrospect -- to have "The Big . . ." as part of its title. Blame it on "The Big Sleep" of a few years earlier.

My guess, anyway . . .

That exchange goes back even further. The "Dirty Ernie from Pismo Beach" bit originated on the radio version of Dragnet, episode unknown.

It was the radio version of the same episode that GayWeezy mentioned in the above post.
