The cursed Winchester *spoilers*

So, here's a question I don't hear very often: The Winchester in this movie is a cursed weapon, as it brings death to all who use it. Jimmy didn't get a chance to use it ever, Dutch doesn't until the end (Where he dies), the trader doesn't use it, but he dies, Young Bull dies, Steve dies and Waco dies. So here's the question: Do you think it brings misfortune and death to everyone, or only to people who are not its true owner?

reply

I hadn't thought of the "curse" angle before. I'd say misfortune only to those not the true owner.

You can lead a horse to water, but a pencil must be lead.

reply

We can only hope so, but the reason I think it may be cursed is that some people got it perfectly legitimately, like the Indian trader and the girl's husband.

The Indian trader could've been cheating at cards, and the girl's husband didn't deserve the rifle since he was a coward who started to run off and leave her when threatened by Indians. :)

Reminds of a more recent film, THE RED VIOLIN. Anyone who possesses the violin ends up badly.
"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"

reply

The indian trader was -- duh -- trading guns to the indians.

reply

Even the villains were repelled by it.

It never occurred to me that the Winchester could have been cursed. That makes the story even more interesting. I like the way that the rifle was the main character in the film. At least I saw it that way. It just had to find it's rightful owner again. If there was a curse, then perhaps it was only because it was not in the hands of the rightful owner as someone else suggested.

reply

The Winchester only gives power to its true owner.

I don't know about cursed. Though maybe Mr. Tolkien saw it, and that's where he got all his ideas but yes, the whole film always seemed pretty obviously to be one big anti-firearms advert. I think the whole familial element muddies things a little.
