Was the widow who owned the house where Chris lived killed when Whitey was killed?? I know he paid the kid a dollar to tell his neighbor to take car of the little dog, but I dont remember him saying she was murdered too.

No. He paid for her trip to Virginia to visit her son's gravesite. When the movie first started, she said she wanted to go there some day. He sent her there as a way to get her out of the house.

I was relieved when Chris made provisions for taking care of Mrs. Brentman's dog before he left.
