I just noticed...

I've seen this picture a number of times, but only just noticed tonight that the song "The Call of the Sea" was most definitely the inspiration for another seaside song titled "Sur La Plage," which is from The Boyfriend. The Boyfriend, of course, was a spoof of 1920's musicals, and the similarities between the two numbers are so strong that I can't help but believe that there is a connection.

On an unrelated note.... Tonight's viewing was the first time that I've seen an HD broadcast of this film on TCM. However, the transfer was problematic. All the colours were ratcheted up to the nth degree, with the whites completely blown out in many cases. This film should have looked much better than this in high definition...

I'm afraid you got that wrong. This movie came out in 1950. Sandy Wilson hadn't written the songs for The Boy Friend yet; it was produced for the first time in London's West End in 1953.

Oh, I'm afraid you misunderstood. I said the the song in this show must have been the inspiration for the song from "The Boyfriend," which was written later....
