How did Gloria Swanson NOT win Best Actress...

She was phenomenal in this film, a truly legendary performance! One of those performances you can’t take your eyes off.

Granted I never saw the Judy Holliday performance that beat her, but man, I can’t imagine Holliday topping this performance.

It’s the same way I feel about Robert Shaw with Jaws...how he was ignored for Best Supporting Actor is one of the greatest mysteries in the history of film to me.

...and this was back when The Oscars actually meant something.

I saw this movie for the first time in 2021. My impression is that her performance was really extravagant & over-the-top (thought she was likely following instructions; her character was supposed to be an over-the-top figure). I could see how the Academy with another choice for winner
