How did silent movie stars react to the movie?

I would like to know how former silent movie stars reacted to the movie. There are some reactions mentioned in the docu about the movie, but are there actual interviews where silent movie stars talk about this movie (written or taped)?

reply

Interviews? Are you forgetting that they couldn't talk?

reply

...what?

reply

Ahaha. Well done

You noticed Buster Keaton in it? he was playing cards at the table.
I thought it was humorous having him play a part Considering he was a silent film star.
He obviously thought well of the movie to agree to play a part.

From an interview I remember on TCM, all those folks were connected to silent films...

That's the haunting thing about the film. The butler, Max? Was FOR REAL a top Silent film director I believe as well...

"Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos!" 🐻

Oh I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. I love these message boards to share thoughts on movies and info with one another.

Erich von Stroheim was a major film director who made one of the best films of all time- Greed (1924). He made several other fine films- Foolish Wives and The Great Gabbo are very good. He was famous for filming 18,000 miles of film and wanting to make his films 8 hours long and then got in a fight when the studio wanted to cut the movie to a reasonable length. This happened to Greed.

When his directorial career faded (due largely to his belligerence and stubbornness) he turned to acting and did many movies, including the great Grand Illusion.

The movie featured the participation of several stars and directors of the silent period, including Swanson, von Stroheim, De Mille, and Keaton.

Your point? The OP’s question is: how did silent film stars react to the movie- not which ones were in it.

reply

If they participated in this movie, then you may imply that they think the movie is good

reply

YOU may imply that. Others may imply that they simply enjoyed being before the camera - some after a long hiatus - regardless of their opinion of the film.

reply

Maybe they needed the money. Silent star Mae Murray said that they weren't that nuts!
