Judy's hair

I love this movie and I especially love Judy and Gene in this. The only thing that bugs me is Judy's hair. It's so bizaare, the way the crown is flat and the sides are rolled up. The shape is very square and makes her forehead look big. Maybe it was a popular style of the time, though. Even with the hair, I think Judy looks lovely. And Gene can sure fill out a tee shirt. Zowie!

It was a popular style then. I don't think it suits her particularly.

I didn't like the hairdo it made her look older.

i think she is suppose to look older, didnt i hear someone say something about her being an old maid...i mean in the movie

reply

I actually think it was okay. Her hair style. She was playing a country girl and it doesn't make sense for her character to have the latest fashions. Still it isn't a realist film so they didn't have to take that extra leap but it's a good touch.

It (her hair style) reminded me of a bird nest.

Another prominent poster on these boards refers to it as "that god-awful Ethel Mertz hairdo."

That matronly hairstyle was THE style at the time for many women. And it did nobody any favors. Even great beauties such as Elizabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner suffered. That hair looked good on Mamie Eisenhower and Jane Wyman. Fashion-wise, this point in the 1950's was also rather unattractive--again, matronly. Even on the slimmest figure. That said, I thought Judy's costuming was ingenious and flattering.

Judy is plump but looks a hell of a lot better here than she did in "Easter Parade" if not quite as pretty as "In The Good Old Summertime." She aged quickly, and in fact looked younger with some meat on her bones, filling in the lines around her mouth, eyes and on her brow.

Her performance in "Summer Stock" is first rate and I wish "Friendly Star" was better known. I prefer it to "Get Happy" to be honest.

I'm not to fond of Judy's short hair in this film either. I prefer her longer hair. I do however like the way they styled it for "Get Happy" and "All For You"

reply

I agree that her hair was better when it wasn't that short style, but I love Judy Garland, in almost every film she ever did. The one exception being the couple of scenes in "Annie get your gun" but they cut that out anyway. The only reason she was below par there was because she was very sick during that time period and she got fired from MGM. You can see her clips there on "Annie get your gun" special features.
