1950, The Year of the Unreliable Flashback(s): Rashomon and Stage Fright


This film was angrily rejected by the film-goers of the 1950s because they felt Hitch had broken the "rules" regarding flashbacks (that they had to be true and not false). For whatever reason, Kurosawa was praised for going even further and basing the entire film on this idea (well he got it from an Akutagawa short story from the early 20th century).
