Hitchcock's worst

This was not up to his normal high standards. The acting was poor, the dialogue stilted and the whole thing was not improved by the terrible acting of Michael Wilding

Stage Fright is weak, agreed. But worse to me, by far: of his later films, Torn Curtain, with Topaz right down there. All time worse: try watching Juno and the Paycock (1930 I believe). UNWATCHABLE!

I have wathched Torn Curtain and Topaz and would agree not great but not that bad..Juno and the Pyacock I thought was terrible but I think Waltzes from Vienna as Hitchcocks absolutely worst movie hands down.

The trouble with the world is that it is always one drink behind.

Not his best that's for sure but far far from being his worse. You haven't seen many Hitchcock's have you?

Agree! i thought i was the only one, left feeling.....feeling...unfulfilled. Lol

I have to say it's very disappointing for Hitchcock, but I still enjoyed it more than "Topaz." This felt more like a romantic melodrama than a suspense film, which would have been fine if it were more compelling. Still I'll give this 7/10 for atmosphere and direction.

I guess the worst that history has done to Stage Fright is, paradoxically, Hitchcock's own reputation. We've seen so many great films by him that we tend to dislike his not-so-great ones. Although, to my mind, it's a fact that Stage Fright is an extremely well-made film and would probably be considered a landmark in any other director's oeuvre. Many amazing films by Hitchcock like Topaz, Mr. % Mrs. Smith and Foreign Correspondant get neglected because of the other great pictures he made. I think it's quite natural and maybe even justified to some extent... but still. Well, all I can say is that I like Stage Fright and can think of many worse films from the 50's.

I agree. Stage Fright is a very well made film. I also love Hitchcock's Waltzes from Vienna, Marnie, Topaz, and several other lesser known Hitchcock films.

Freku, I also posted a review about Stage Fright. I am interested in hearing your opinion about it. Its available in this messageboard.

It's not on the high end of his works, but it's not the worst. I'd put it above Under Capricorn, Number Seventeen, Jamaica Inn, The Ring, Juno and the Paycock, Rich and Strange, Easy Virtue just to name a few. I can understand how someone would dislike the false flashback, since it's so unconventional. It's not one of his best, but it's not the worst.

What a ludicrous discussion! How would you apply this to say, John Ford's work? I believe he directed about 50 films before Stagecoach. Surely many of these are lesser masterpieces than 'The Searchers'...
