Yoshiko (Shirley) Yamaguchi Had Quite an Interesting Biography

The actress who played Miyako Saijo was a tri-lingual (Japanese, Chinese and English) singer/actress/activist/politician very famous (and at one point infamous) in both China and Japan. This makes Kurosawa's reasons for casting her all the more interesting if you know her history as a film star in Manchuria before being unmasked as Japanese after the war.
