If my memory serves me well in 'The Idiot', Kurosawa went even further. He shows (briefly) a christian orthodox altar. Kurosawa wanted to remain as faithful as possible to Dostoyevsky's novel, anyhow seeing christian orthodox imagery in postwar Japan was kinda odd to say the least. Even more than listening Toshiro Mifune singing christmas carols.

Well, "The Idiot" was set in Hokkaido (Japan's big northern island), and there was and still is some Russian influence there due to Hokkaido's proximity to Russia. I believe there are some Orthodox churches in Hokkaido. So it's not all that unrealistic.

Even more than listening Toshiro Mifune singing christmas carols.


Hotaru no Hikari isn't actually a Christmas carol. In the US that tune is used for a song normally sung at Christmastime, but in Japan it means something different and has different lyrics. It has kind of a sense of the end of one thing and beginning of another, and is usually sung at New Years or at the end of a school year.
