question about Aoye and Saijo [spoilers]

does anyone think that some kind of romance was growing between the two?
Aoye didn't sell the Red Mountains painting because it was made during a special period of his... and Saijo started to look with a different look to Aoye
they seem much closer then they did at the beginning of the film.

it could be an interesting subplot...
any ideas?

Although there is a definite attraction from the start (he was painting the "red" mountains when he met her for the first time) ...

Aoye (and therefore Kurosawa) is not interested in pursuing anything more than friendship (don't forget, Aoye's model is obviously in love with him) ... and the whole point of the film is that they are put through the process of being identified as "lovers" [how scandalous! -- right?!] when it really wasn't true.

Apparently, something similar happened to AK...

from p. 122 of Galbraith:

" ... Kurosawa was romantically linked in the tabloids to Hideko Takamine, the star of Horse. This, combined with the chaos at Toho -- the strikes, the New Face contest, the unhappy stars now at Shintoho -- generated titillating copy for the tabloids."

He often expressed his hatred for this type of "journalism."

I think of the Juzo Itami tragedy when I watch this film these days...

The reason for Miss Saijo's reluctance to join the suit against Amour was that she realized she had fallen in love with Aoe. She plays the same song on the piano and sings it over and over again -- the one she was singing when she met him. She tries to buy the painting of the red mountain he was painting when she first saw him.

Aoe is sketching her eyes when he's talking with his model played by Noriko Sengoku. He won't sell the painting of the red mountain he was painting when he met Miss Saijo.

Plenty of clues that they were falling in love through the movie.

But one could argue Ichiro was also falling in love with Masako, Hiruta's daughter. He visited her, brought her gifts, held her hand. Was it just compassion? It's an interesting movie where there isn't a love interest for the lead actor. I think it may be because, as a sort of idealized version of artists, Ichiro is in love with beauty itself and not with one woman in particular. Hence his earnest outrage at the scandal.

If they had got together it would have been a Frank Capra movie. It is sufficient to show they respect and like each other. Could something develop? Absolutely, but tat would detract from the main story. So I am glad Kurosawa didn't go there.
