In the restaurant scene, the man at the piano singing "September Song" is Walter Huston, father of director John Huston, grandfather of Angelica, who starred in
" Treasure of the Sierra Madre" I have always loved that song in the movie after I found that out.

Well, actually, he's the voice on the record in the FIRST restaurant scene (as they're waiting for the plane to be fixed). The soldier who sings at the piano, according to the credits, is Jimmy Lydon.

Thanks, I stand corrected! Still love the movie. Wasn't Jimmy Lydon a famous singer in the 50's?

reply

I enjoyed that part of the movie. Great singer!

Thanks for the clarification. I was watching the movie with cc and when that record came on cc displayed 'Frank Sinatra singing'. I knew that was not Frank and wondered who it was. Love September Song and this info makes it even more interesting if you remember that Angelica Huston sang a nice cover of it in an episode of SMASH.

Huston's recording of September Song was a hit by the way.

September Song was a hit song from a 1938 Broadway show called Knickerbocker Holiday. Walter Huston was in the original cast. After being used in this film the record became a hit all over again.

The young lonesome soldier in the restaurant in Florence was actor James Lydon famous for playing Henry Aldrich in a series of films in the early 1940s that were sort of Paramount's answer to the Andy Hardy films. This role was an opportunity for him to break away from the type casting inevitable that goes with a recurring role in a film series. he did a good job but it didn't revive a film career. I think he did OK on both sides of the camera in TV and is now about 92.
