Historical Basis?

Is there any historical basis to this film?

Was there a Confederate plot to start an uprising in California?

reply

I haven't found anything on it yet. I have read that the farthest western battle between US and CS forces was in the Arizona Territory area claimed by the Confederacy. It was a small engagement, probably less than two dozen men involved if my memory serves me right, and it was earlier in the war, around 1862 or 63 I believe. I'm sure someone who just looked that battle up will jump all over me about it, but like I said, I am just going on memory. The engagement depicted in this movie was between Confederate cavalry and Indians, so I don't think that it would be counted as a civil war battle or not. I highly doubt that this movie was based on historical truth, but I liked it anyway. The final battle took place in March of 1865, just a few weeks before General Lee surrendered. A successful pro-Confederate uprising in California would not have affected the outcome of the war in it's last stage, imho that is.

I know they also claimed the New Mexico territory, too but had about as much control of it as they did Missouri, and West Virginia (which is pretty much none), they never got as far as California.
