A small goof

In the 35 fifth minute we see Valerie Hobson (followed by Ronald Squire) walking into the room and saying something to the child having his first frenzied ride on the horse. She seems to utter a few syllables to Paul but they are silent.

I hesitate to criticise this movie with its good deep-focus photography and excellent cross-cutting.

I doubt this was a goof. It was meant to be seen from Paul's point of view. He is so taken over and wrapped up in his own world of riding his horse to victory that he is not aware of anything that is said to him until he 'gets there' and finishes his frantic ride.
