Didn't do it for me, and that's fine.

Loved Seven Samurai. Expected something a bit different here. Somewhat histrionic and the three stories being "different" wasn't enough.

Not going to say it is garbage (hopefully this isn't an emperor's new clothes situation). Just not totally on board

Edit: I think, sadly, the archaic views on women did bring me out of immersion to an extent. I realize he was a product of his time, yadda yadda.

Don't forget this film also took place in feudal Japan, when the views on women were much more archaic even compared to 1950. In Kurosawa's films that took place in more "modern" settings the attitudes towards women were more liberal, although obviously still not to the degree we are used to these days.

Not to mention most of the film is told from someone else's point of view. We heard 4 different accounts of the same events, none of which agree with each other, so we don't really know what actually happened.

Yes, exactly. If anything Kurosawa has arguably provided a pretty accurate account of the gender settings of the period, where women were considered the property of their lords, though you also sense this may not have been the happiest of marriages any way.🐭

Looking at some of the narratives, it looks like the wife was looking at a way to escape.

It's that man again!!
