Plot Hole?

I am a little confused about the watch. Danny pawns the watch for 30.00, the detective that visits Danny the next day explains that in order to avoid charges, Danny must pay for the watch outright. Why wouldn't Danny just get the watch out of the pawn shop and return it to the store? He pawned it to balance the register so he still had 10.00 left over, his friend was paying him back that day anyway.

I don't understand why he didn't sell the car. He could have paid off the hundred and then dealt with the finance company later.

I guess part of the plot is that Danny didn't really know what he was doing or had not premeditated anything, he was just a desperate person doing desperate things.

Great movie though. I really enjoyed Jeanne Cagney and the tragic Miss Bates was so beautiful.

You folks don't get the financing here. You can't sell what you don't own. The sale of the watch contractually forbid pawning it or full payment came due immediately. (Although the plot did create a hole by conveniently forgetting that Buzz did tell Danny he'd repay the $20). Danny couldn't sell the car without clear title, which he acknowledged himself by stating the offered price (300) was less than what he owed (350).

He probably wouldn't have had enough money to get the watch back anyway, as a pawn shop would charge interest.
