Johnny tracks down Pat the next day/night to the theatre, but she already appears to have a new friend/companion inside 24 hours.🐭

Difficult to tell. The single male appears first, she greets him, then four more friends show up so she could be just going out with a bunch of friends and the single man being the first to arrive makes him look more significant than he was.

I know what you mean, but it's mainly because of Johnny's reaction. He's often disappointed so he is likely to jump to that conclusion.

The film quickly cuts to show his reaction rather than the full meeting so it could have been that a kiss was shot but then omitted in order to make the whole thing more subtle and ambiguous, but I'm speculating.
