My Critique

I have never encountered a film like Los Olvidados. I’ve studied Art History, and I loved Surrealist art. This is my first Surrealist film I have ever watched, and now I love Surrealism even more. The dream sequence was like looking into a surrealist painting and trying to discover a type of meaning or logic to it. The story is great because it depicts the struggle of poor Mexican boy trying to make a living on the streets. Luis Bunuel shows Pedro as a victim of having a loveless mother, and a victim of what growing in the streets can do to a child. Like looking at a painting, the use of symbolism is greatly used in this film. For example, Milk was used in the film several times, but with different purposes. Trying to find logic in a Surrealist painting is one of the reasons why it’s one of my favorite artistic movement, and now I love it even more for it’s impact it had for films.

This movie is not really surrealism is neorealism, the surrealism was useless for the film.
