This movie REALLY needs a Criterion edition...

The best movie from Luis Buñuel and still no Criterion, I supouse its becouse Televisa own the rigths of the movie and just wont sell them, so we just a have a crappy dvd vertion of the film, while this glorious, amazing film need the edition it deserves... dont you think so?

I agree. This and Viridana are Bunuel's best films. You can write to Criterion ( I have been for years) and ask for a DVD edition.

I didn't even know there was a crappy dvd version out there. The only thing I've been able to find is a vhs, and that's definitely crappy. Anyway, Criterion definitely needs to get a hold of this, I agree.

Currently this movie is available on DVD in a french edition region 2 PAL, In addition there is a mexican DVD version that is region 0 NTSC that includes english, french and spanish subtitles (and portuguese if i am not wrong)
The only extras on the mexican DVD are a synopsis, filmographies AND and alternate ending, pretty interesting because it's totally different than the original one and because many people tought it was lost or that this ending never were shot really.

so until Criterion releases a decent DVD edition those are the best choices if you want to get this masterpiece on DVD.

They who believe that the money does everything, end by doing everything for money

Where would one find it?

the mexican DVD is actually region 1 & 4, so will play anywhere on a DVD in the Americas only.

amazon now links these directly for third party sellers:

i saw it retailing in mexico for less than US$6 (www.mixup.com.mx) but you should be able to find it via a third party seller for around $20 including shipping. it's still cheaper than criterion collection like that and frankly, i don't think much is lost by not having a artsy fartsy Criterion booklet and boring scholarly commentary track.

the menus and box are in spanish but they are well done. the film has excellent English subtitles as well as Spanish and includes the alternate ending as a special feature as another person says.

Actually, I do speak some Spanish, so navigating the menus wouldn't be too arduous for me. If the DVD had English subtitles, I'd be OK. A Crierion disc would be great, I'll take what I can get. Assuming, of course, that the movie is as good at I'm told.

Thanks much!

Actually Australia is region 4 as well, yet the aussies couldn't watch it becuase the DVD is NTSC not PAL, What does it mean? It means that even if it is "multiregion" (0) it couldn't be played on a European DVD player or Australian for that matter because the color system used is different.

That's why some "americanos" who buy an european PAL DVD, cannot watch it at all or at most they just can see a blurry, distorted image in B&W.

You'd need a multi-system DVD player (not the same thing than "multi-region") capable of converting NTSC signals into PAL signals and viceversa. OR a Multi-system TV set which are not common in most countries.

For people living in other "regions" that uses "NTSC" color system (Japan, South Korea, Philipines, etc.) just buy a multiregion DVD player and that's it!

For most info about color systems, click here:

BTW Talking about the Criterion release. I do think an edition with the quality of those Criterion releases, with crystal clear video and remastered sound plus a good set of extra features: interviews with some of the actors still alive or using interviews from some years ago with the now deceased actors or Luis Buñuel himself talking about the movie, etc. Plus some short included (what about "Simón del desierto" as an extra??). An audiocommentary, perhaps a featurette asking young latin american filmmakers how much Buñuel have influenced them, etc.

The mexican and french DVD are reported having at most a "mediocre" image and sound, and barely no extras.

Don't you want the best possible presentation on DVD about one of the cinema masterpieces of all time? I do!

If Criterion edition for "Los olvidados" is half as good as their releases for "The Beauty and the Beast" by Jean Cocteau or "Ikiru" by Kurosawa, I'd happily pay up to 30 bucks for it! It worth every penny.

This definitely needs a criterion release. I found this on VHS yesterday at my school's media library, but the VHS was literally 29 years old and some parts were extremely washed out. With that said, since I still enjoyed it despite the horrible VHS quality, I'm sure a criterion DVD would be a much better experience for this movie.
