DON'T SEE THIS AS A CLASSIC

I really like RICHARD WIDMARK and GENE TIERNEY and had seen this years ago on tv so I bought the dvd and after watching it was not greatly impressed.

Richard Widmark is over the top in this and the plot did not move me much,I did not get the same feeling of London as I do watching THE GOOD DIE YOUNG or POOL OF LONDON.
It is not a bad film but I expected more from it.

Yeah, I just finished watching it and while it had it's moments, I doubt I'll remember it long.

I expected more from it too. It's out on Criterion Collection so I figured it must be very good. It is good, in a dark unpleasant way, but not a story I can appreciate. It's more than okay for an attempt at something different, but even before the wrestling match in the gym, the mood was dropping lower and lower unrelentingly.

It's difficult to define "classic" when we're dealing with movies 60 years old.
However, it is one of the best films of its genre, as well as it's era.
The fight scene is definitely one of the greatest moments of filmmaking.

It's wonderfully shot and there's certainly an iconic vibe to it, to how Widmark storms through the picture to his inevitable demise. 1950 was such a great year for film though that Night might still not make the top 10.
