I watched it for the first time today, and although I know Errol thought he was miscast in westerns, I really thought he was magcigicent in this movie. Especially the scene with the gun draw in the saloon. Anyone else think he was good in this? I think Errol seriously underestimated himself as an actor.
I've seen it. Pretty average western but entertaining. Good sequence: The fight between Errol and one of the bad guys in which they wrestle around on the ground fighting over the bad guy's gun until the gun goes off and smoke rises menacingly from their bodies...I won't spoil who it was that got shot but I think you probably know.
' magcigicent '? I tend to somewhat agree with you about Flynn's performance. Maybe not magnificent, but certainly quite adequate. I also feel that the film itself is underrated, certainly deserving of a rating higher than '6.0'. I'd give it at least a '7'. I plan on recording it when it plays again on 'Encore Westerns' on the 23rd of August.
This film is not exactly the same kind of western quality I think you find in films like Lonesome Dove and Open Range. Having said that, however, I enjoyed it. It was a good story, and I did enjoy Flynn.
Karl mentioned that he liked Flynn's use of his pistol in the saloon shootout. I thought Flynn's motion was smooth enough, but the idea of "fanning" any single action revolver is just plain silly to me. Then again, there are lots of westerns where someone fans his pistol, and I simply suspend my disbelief and enjoy the film. I enjoyed watching Flynn a whole lot, but I would not go so far as to call his performance magnificent.
Like Mr. McLaurel , I liked the scene where the black powder smoke rises ominously from the two combatants as they wrestle on the ground.
Iwals said he liked the film but thought the ending was kind of cheesey. I might not choose the term "cheesey," but I think I agree with his thoughts on the ending.
Suky did not like Flynn and Alexis Smith's singing duet in the film. I thought the singing worked rather well for the plot of the film. They were not bad, either. I also liked the Burma film, but then I like most of Flynn's films. Whatever he was in his personal life, he certainly was fun to watch on film.
i like flynn and i like westerns so my opinion is not entirely objective. i'd rate this 7.0 to 7.5...not a great western, or even one of flynn's best, but definitely enjoyable if you like either. for the non-flynn fan, the 6.0/6.5 rating seems about right. someone mentioned the glenn ford movie, the sheepman...there are similarities between the two (the sheepman was filmed about a decade after montana), but i think the sheepman is a better movie, overall.
Errol Flynn wearing a suit (with silk lapels), with a vest and tie while herding sheep? It looked nice in Technicolor, but was absurd in a practical sense. Alexis Smith looked drunk or high throughout most of the movie. During the third act, the liberal use of "process screen" shots was distracting and looked really cheap.
I just watched it for the first time last night and I really liked it as well. 8/10. Part of the Errol Flynn Westerns boxed set. They certainly can't compare with his early masterpieces but in saying that they are vastly underrated.
