I got my DVR all set to record...I just finished viewing (for the second time), the original an hour ago, and want to see for myself, how bad this is.

shareIt's not a terrible film, but it's nowhere near the quality of Mrs. Miniver. That's always going to make it disappointing. I didn't care for the daughter's love triangle story, which took up a large chunk of the story. It was pretty obvious, at least to me, who she was going to choose. There was no chemistry between her and the Leo Genn character. I found him to be bland and pretentious. She was too plain and quiet for him to find interesting. That whole storyline just didn't work and took away from what was a sweet love story of an older couple trying to get back to the normalcy of every day life.
I do love the pairing of Garson and Pidgeon and I'll watch them in anything. After all the films they made together, they still have this thing about them that you can't take your eyes off of. The last 20ish minutes of the film really works because it's focused on them.
