You mean there are 3 other people who like this movie?

I saw The Milkman in a theater in 1950 - I was 8 years old!

I never saw it again until 1983, when I had just bought my first VCR. I taped it on a BETA cassette - yes, BETA! I still have it, but it is getting to be almost unviewable, with a lot of rolling and drop-outs. I have not seen it appear on any channel since that taping. It has never been issued on home video of any format.

I'm still hoping that one of these days, it will come out on DVD. Do you think they would bring it out just to please us 4 people??

My family is in the milk business. I used to belong to a club that collected milk bottles, carriers and assorted memorabilla. Many members had taped this movie when it had appeared on amc sometime back and it was a hot coolectable. I had seen this movie on amc probably in the 1980's. It was humorous because my father had been a milkman on a divco and he bore a striking resemblance to William Conrad who is in this movie. My father who was hefty was often stopped in the street by people asking him if he were "Frank Cannon".

Make that 4 people. Like you I have been searching. Have you had any luck?

reply

Make that 5!

I've never actually seen it, but I do have several of the songs from it, and lots of pictures. I'm a big Donald fan, so I really hope they start releasing his Universal pictures on dvd soon!

Correction - 6 people like this movie! I've seen this movie only once on AMC I believe sometime in the 90's and have been waiting to see it again on TV or for it to come out on DVD ever since. I too have become a Donald fan - ever since seeing him on The Milkman! He's fun to watch!

I suppose I'm number 7--sure hope that will be lucky for me. :)
But luck aside, I managed to get my hands on a bootleg DVD copy of this cute movie and really enjoyed it. Main reason I got it is because I'm a huge Donald O'Connor fan, and he was great in this. Mr. "Ha-cha-cha-cha" himself, Jimmy Durante, was great too. Can't believe my 4-year-old was able to recognize Donald immediately (there's the guy from Call Me Madam!) and Jimmy too (from Frosty the Snowman). Sure wish all of Donald's movies are easily available. WLB :)

#8. And I was also 8 in 1950!

reply

Count me as #9. I love the part when Jimmy whistles for the horse to pull the milk wagon, then later whistles for the motorizes milk wagon.

reply

That makes me number #10. I've been wanting to see this movie for ages (I've been a big fan of Donald since seeing Singin in the Rain when I was 11) and I just managed to get it from Ebay. I thought it was really funny, I have to say the plot reminds me a bit of a Francis movie and the songs and dancing are just magic.

Think now there's 10 of us they might release the DVD? :)

#15! Saw it in 1950 when I was 6. Finally got a public domain copy on DVD. Just as funny as I remembered and I love the dancing by Donald and Jimmy.

We are HUGE fans of Donald O'Connor. We loved him in Singin' In The Rain but absolutely adored him in I Love Melvin. We actually have the Life Magazine that was released during the movie that appeared in the movie (Green Cover with Debbie Reynolds in red sweater). We always wished they had done more together and that the would release I Love Melvin. We have never seen The Milkman and have heard nothing but great reviews about it. Would LOVE to see it. Is there a way to get any copy that anyone has?

Great little movie! I just ran across an old VHS copy I had recorded from Superstation WTBS in the early 80's. Too bad Universal has not put this on DVD yet, but with their new Universal Vault collection on Amazon.com there is hope for films like this to again see the light of day!!!

Can I be #11? My Dad was a milkman too and I used to go out on his divco with him to help on summer mornings. Great memories of special moments with my Dad. I loved watching this with him years ago and really do wish it would be released on DVD.

reply

LOL. Over 5 years later and it's up to 14.

Somebody bring this to DVD!
