A fantastic performance in his first movie and even greater ones to come.

Agreed. I think this movie more clearly went beyond the great US good guy myth of WWII and caught the reaction of returning veterans to civil society, especially in the fist fight between the Grand Old Men of WWI and the young guys coming home from WWII. King of the Hill imitated that scene and brought it up to date in an episode.
