One of Joseph H. Lewis' Best

I would put Gun Crazy at the top of the list of Lewis' films, but this one is a close second for me. There's less at stake here than in Gun Crazy, but the locations and the very stylish camera placements made Lady Without Passport a real pleasure. Hedy Lamarr is beautiful as always but a little wooden here, I thought. On the other hand, John Hodiak is fun, especially in the scenes with his phoney accent, as are the Cuban henchmen and the shady pilot. A movie with many fine little touches, such as the nervous Immigration cop who keeps pacing around in the Florida office.

And I totally agree! Enjoyed it very much.

Don't forget George Macready. He was great in these sinister roles in the 40s and did not disappoint in tis.
