Hair Cut

From the Trivia section:

The scene in which Deborah Kerr cuts her own hair and then cuts to her sunning with a perfectly quaffed hairstyle got such a big laugh at the initial screenings of the film that producers debated removing the scene. However, they couldn't figure out another way to explain Kerr's change of hairstyle, so they kept the improbable scenes intact

I just saw this scene and had to look it up here to see if there was an explanation. Not only was the hair cut, it looked like it had been set in curlers.

At least the men looked grimy, sweaty and bearded. Deborah looked like she was able to take a soothing bubble bath after a hard day's journey and change into fresh clothes, both outer and under-wear.

I had to laugh too when I saw Deborah sunning herself, and obviously had just seen a professional hair stylist.

I then started wondering if she cut her hair for this movie or was it short to start with and she had a wig for earlier scenes? It seems Deborah Kerr had her hair short most of her career.

On "At least the men looked grimy, sweaty and bearded." I had to laugh at some of the scenes with the men too. For example, there are closeups of Quatermain where it's obvious he's freshly shaven and black makeup was spread on to get the three-day-old-beard affect.

I think it was a wig at the beginning.

This was filmed on location so I wouldn't be surprised if into the filming Kerr balked at the uncomfortable wig and said she wasn't going to wear the wig anymore and they better figure out a way for her to ditch it.

While this does seem somewhat ridiculous. Especially if you know Debra Kerr's hair, I will say that if I did this myself, it would come out the same.

I have naturally wavy hair. It would take longer to cut, but if I did it, washed it and then let it air dry, it would come out much the same way. My curls are a bit different, but running my fingers through and air drying in the sun, it would look like that.

So I guess I'm one of the few for which this scene doesn't bring a laugh and is utterly believable.

I just thought she had curly hair, and as for looking like she had just had a bath, it was a river bank, she had.
