year the movie takes place

does anyone know when this story takes place? I am trying to figure our the significance of Steeles comment that Lloyd Barnes made his money before the income tax.

So if anyone knows the answer to either of these it would be a great help!

I think it is set around when it was made, because it says how Bogart and the cop friend knew each other from the war, and WWII ended within 5 years of this film's completion.

The time period was right on the filming time, based on their shared experience during the war. However, the US has had an income tax on and off since 1862 and permanently since the 16th Amendment in 1913, so that comment really doesn't make sense in the movie.

The cool thing is you can look up the address on Google and see the street view of the entrance to the apartment courtyard. It looks the same except for bigger trees and vegetation.

The address is in the locations area.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

Story takes place in 1949/50. I think the tax comment was just a joke on Barnes's age, since income taxes had already been around for many years.

Somewhere in the film it's mentioned that it's 1947, maybe on the newspaper that is shown.

On the 3rd planet.
There IS no 3rd planet!
Don't you think I know that?

The Captain reads Dixon's prior records and the last one where a year was mentioned was in early 1947. In a following scene, he just says "June", so it is open as to the year- it could be 1947 or later.

The paper shown where the football star was beaten had no date. It said Vol XXV, No. 81 (possibly 61).
